Akron officials rolling out new safety measures in Highland Square

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – Akron leaders are rolling out new safety measures in Highland Square, aiming to reduce large gatherings and improve security in one of the city’s busiest nightlife areas.

Barriers were set up Tuesday along a stretch of West Market Street, blocking access as part of the plan. City officials said the goal is to discourage street parties and crowds forming around parked cars, which have raised concerns in recent months.

“We’ve seen, a lot of incidents in the square. We’ve also had a couple shootings. a lot of parking lot parties, a lot of partying on the street, an open container, drinking out on the sidewalks,” said Ward 1 councilperson Fran Wilson.
