Albany woman sentenced for drunken driving wreck that killed her friends

ALBANY — An Albany woman whose 7-year-old brother died after being hit by a car more than a decade ago was sentenced for killing two passengers in an October drunken driving crash.

Imahjai Sutherland, 25, was given a 6⅔- to 20-year indeterminate prison sentence in Albany County Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty in March to aggravated vehicular homicide. The crash caused the deaths of the vehicle’s passengers: 27-year-old Jamilla N. Tirado and 25-year-old Cepelynn T. Johnson.

In 2013, Sutherland’s younger brother, Qazir, was taken off life support after being struck by a car on South Pearl Street while crossing the road. Two years later, a section of the street was named Qazir Way in his memory…
