After 70 years, Heldeberg Bluestone will close

EAST BERNE — This summer marks the end of an era for the Giebitz family and for Heldeberg Bluestone & Marble.

During the first third of the 20th Century, the Helderbergs were dotted with bluestone quarries — some of the bluestone paved the sidewalks of New York City. But the availability of concrete, which was far less costly, led to their demise.

Enter the Paul Giebitzes. In the 1950s, the father and son revived an abandoned quarry in Reidsville. The business grew to several quarries, including one for marble in Vermont, and the stone was used for prominent projects in the United States and abroad…
