Ward concedes Schenectady council race to incumbent Chaires

SCHENECTADY — Rachael Ward conceded Tuesday’s Democratic Party primary for City Council to incumbent Justin Chaires, who, according to unofficial election results, held a narrow 54-vote lead.

Chaires had the lead even though Ward’s candidacy was backed by the leadership of the city’s Democratic Party and Mayor Gary McCarthy. Former City Council President Marion Porterfield was among the Democrats who backed Chaires, who has a job with the state Senate.
