ROTTERDAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A Rotterdam man has pleaded guilty to raping someone under 17 years old. 51-year-old Brian Barrett will be sentenced to two years prison, according to the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office.
The investigation began when the victim reported the rape to the Rotterdam Police Department in March 2024. Through the investigation, it was revealed that Barrett had started raping the victim when she was 14 years old and continued until the end of 2023.

Before the victim reported it to the police, Barrett sent her text messages that he would have to kill himself if she reported it. Once she alerted authorities, Rotterdam Police Department Detectives interviewed Barrett, during which he made admissions of the incidents.
Authorities said that throughout the investigation, Barrett told Rotterdam detectives that he was a New York State Corrections Officer and that he knew other members of the Rotterdam Police Department, as well as other individuals. The Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office says none of his name-dropping inhibited the investigation by Rotterdam police.

Following his guilty plea to the ten-count indictment, the judge agreed to sentence Barrett to two years in prison with 10 years of post-release supervision. When he is released from prison, Barrett will be required to register as a sex offender for a minimum of 20 years, and a full stay away order of protection will be issued for the victim…
