Schenectady and Glenville are in the midst of resolving a decadeslong, $1 million debt concerning unpaid sewage fees.
Paul LaFond, general services commissioner for Schenectady, said the town of Glenville owes more than $1 million in partially unpaid bills dating back to at least 2016, per city records. The debt is connected primarily to unpaid capital improvement and connection fees associated with the city’s wastewater treatment facility, LaFond said. The regional plant processes sewage from the city of Schenectady as well as parts of Rotterdam, Scotia and Glenville.
LaFond and Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy, who has served as mayor since 2011, said there have been attempts to resolve the debt over the past decade. Currently, the city is declining to authorize any new Glenville additions to the wastewater plant’s system until a settlement is reached; if one cannot be negotiated, McCarthy said it could escalate to a lawsuit…
