Albany is no stranger to heavy rain events, but most of the time those high rainfall totals come from tropical systems; that’s what makes today so unique.
A quasi-stationary area of low pressure has brought widespread heavy rain to the Capital Region going back to late Tuesday, with rainfall totals of a few to several inches widespread across the area. Flash flooding has been a concern as well with rising water levels and washed out roadways. From midnight through 2:00pm on Wednesday, 4.58 inches of rain have already fallen at Albany International Airport. That by itself would rank third all-time for a single-day rainfall total, but there is more heavy rain on the way this afternoon that will inflate the total even higher.
That total through 2:00pm already ranks as the rainiest July day on record at the airport, beating out the previous record of 3.49 inches of rain on July 13th, 1996…
