CASTLETON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Heavy rain hit the Capital Region on Wednesday, with areas of Rensselaer County being hit particularly hard. In Castleton-on-Hudson, a 300-year-old grist mill was completely washed out by the Muitzes Kill.
“It was really like a flash flood this morning,” recalled Andy Klein, owner of the mill and the home on the property which was also flooded. “I was woken up by banging on my door by my neighbor saying, ‘Your car’s being flooded. You got to move your car. The kill is overflowing.’ And I got out just in time just to move the car. And I’ve just been watching the devastation ever since. Unfortunately, we lost the mill building earlier this morning, an old historic mill. And it’s really kind of surreal, really unfortunate and sad.”
Klein says that it’s been devastating to witness.

“It’s a huge loss,” Klein stated. “I have the house next door. I’ve had that for 18 years, the mill house, and I have no idea how bad the damage is inside the house. The waters have receded a little bit. The mill obviously is mostly collapsed. So that’s a total loss. And I’m just glad everyone’s OK. You know, obviously it’s just property. So we salvage a little bit, to get some things out of there in the flood waters. But it’s been a tough day.”…
