According to authorities, a contractor performing drainage work in the neighborhood had accidentally hit and ruptured a two-inch medium-pressure natural gas main. Firefighters immediately established a safety perimeter and ordered the evacuation of all residents within 500 feet of the gas leak in all directions, affecting 25 homes.
National Grid also reportedly turned off electrical service to 70 additional homes due to the damage gas main’s proximity to underground electrical infrastructure.
Residents were cleared to return to their homes at about 8:05 p.m., the fire district said. Electrical service had already been restored but natural gas service reportedly remained off while repairs continued.
