Wynantskill teachers rally to support proposed merger with Troy schools

WYNANTSKILL, NY (WRGB) — Teachers in Wynantskill aren’t just staying in the classroom — they are taking to the streets to save their school.

Saturday, a group of educators braved the March chill along Main Avenue, holding signs in support of the proposed merger with Troy city schools. The rally comes just days before Tuesday’s high-stakes vote, scheduled for March 31st. Without the annexation, superintendent Mary Yodis says the district faces a $650,000 budget gap.

Promoters of the plan say the move would bring in $241 million in state incentives over the next 14 years. That funding would allow for a zero-percent tax increase and expanded programs and sports for students. But if the merger fails, residents could face a 6.4 percent tax hike…
