Albany Medical Center performs world’s first AI-guided brain surgery

ALBANY, N.Y. (WNYT)- Albany Medical Center says it became the first hospital in the world to use a new AI-guided surgical platform for complex brain surgery.

According to Albany Medical Center, the first procedure used the Stealth AXiS Surgical System by Medtronic to remove a tumor from a patient’s pituitary gland. The surgery was performed by ENT surgeon Jordon Grube, DO, and neurosurgeon Robert Heller, MD.

The hospital said surgeons used a small camera through the nose to reach the tumor at the base of the brain. It said the AI system gave real-time 3D image-guided tracking so doctors could see their tools in relation to the tumor and nearby critical structures…
