NEW SCOTLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Albany County officials responded to a chlorine leak at the New Salem Water Treatment Facility in the town of New Scotland on Tuesday. According to Town of Bethlehem Commissioner of Public Works Paul Penman, the public drinking water supply was not compromised during the incident.

Operators at the plant reportedly identified the leak from a 150-pound cylinder used in the drinking water treatment process at about 10 a.m. Penman said staff immediately implemented emergency response protocols, which included evacuating the building and notifying emergency response agencies.
One employee who found the leak was reportedly taken to the hospital for evaluation. They have not reported any symptoms or injuries, according to the commissioner.

The leak has since been fully secured with no ongoing release, Penman said. Air monitoring conducted on-site and in the surrounding area has reportedly detected no off-site impact.
“At no time was the public drinking water supply compromised, and operations continue to meet all state and federal standards,” Penman said. “The safety of plant personnel and the surrounding community remains the top priority.”…
