Texas falls 6-3 to Tennessee in opening round of Women’s College World Series

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Elsa Morrison delivered a 3-run home run in the second inning, and then Tennessee’s top-flight pitching took care of the rest Thursday at the Women’s College World Series.

The seventh-seeded Lady Volunteers upset second-seeded Texas 6-3 in the first round of the WCWS at Devon Park in Oklahoma City, dropping the Longhorns to an elimination game at 6 p.m. Friday against Mississippi State. Tennessee will take on Texas Tech in a winner’s bracket game Saturday.

Trailing 5-1 into the sixth inning, Texas second baseman Leighann Goode popped a 2-run home run off reliever Karlyn Pickens to pull Texas within two runs at 5-3. Pickens tossed a clean seventh after her offense spotted her another run on a sacrifice fly to seal the win.

Morrison’s big swing early on came after Teagan Kavan hit Alanna Leach and walked Makenzie Butt to put a pair of runners on. Morrison belted the first pitch she saw from Kavan over the center field wall for her seventh homer of the season…
