ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – States across the country are celebrating 100 years of Route 66. Here in the metro, young minds are spending their summer break preserving the history of the mother road. It’s home to eye-catching neon signs, historic buildings, and millions of travelers every year.
As Route 66 celebrates 100 years, a new generation is looking back at its history, creating their own spin on some of the iconic buildings along the 18-mile stretch on Central in Albuquerque. “What was the original name of this hotel,” said educator Desiree Vargas, as student Shayrooz responds, “Sleepy bear.” “Sleepy Bear Travel Lodge,” confirms Vargs. Going on to say, “Remember when we looked at sleepy bear?”
With excitement on their faces, a group of students proudly showed off their Route 66 knowledge and handmade models and signs, which were inspired by places along the Mother Road…
