Albuquerque Police: License plate readers have helped solve 13 murder cases in 2026

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – it’s technology that has stirred controversy and privacy concerns license plate readers. But the Albuquerque Police Department said they’re helping solve murders and other crimes. APD explains that their readers are not the popular brand “Flock Safety” that caused communities, even Taos to ban them. They wanted to highlight the success they have with their license plate readers and what makes it different.

While many are using the controversial company flock safety… Albuquerque police have their own automated license plate readers called “ALPR”. Which are stationed at undisclosed intersections across the city.

APD’s Communications Director Gilbert Gallegos said they’ve been successful solving crimes and finding stolen cars. “If any of those cars pass through an intersection or an area where there’s a license plate reader, it sends out an alert to all the officers and our auto theft team,” said Gallegos…
