Families devastated after flooding at Fairview Memorial Park damages graves

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Dozens of family members are devastated after finding their loved ones’ graves flooded at Fairview Memorial Park in southeast Albuquerque on Yale near Coal. About 18 graves at the cemetery were flooded Sunday morning and sunken in, after families say a sprinkler system was left on Friday through the weekend. In desperation, families started using cups to scoop out water, trying to preserve their loved one’s resting place.

“I come to visit my grandma every chance I get, so my mom and I came yesterday earlier in the day, and the sprinklers were on,” Sadie Roman said. “I thought maybe it’s the regular maintenance. Then we came back around 8 p.m., and they were still on.”

Roman says when she came back again with her mom Sunday morning, the sprinklers were still on. “I just felt devastated for the rest of the family members because a lot of the graves were all sunken in,” Roman said. “Her headstone is sunken in, and you can tell it’s going to sink in more.”…
