Man ‘shoots, kills cousin during heated argument over whose enchiladas were spicier’

A family dinner turned fatal when an Albuquerque man allegedly shot and killed his cousin following a heated dispute over a batch of green chile enchiladas.

Ervin Joaquin Gutierrez, 22, is facing an open count of murder after the shooting death of his 25-year-old cousin, Nathaniel Cavazos, at an apartment complex on Aug. 27, 2026.

According to Albuquerque Police Department court records, the incident began as a friendly family gathering, but turned deadly. Gutierrez had driven from Roswell to visit his relatives, and the cousins spent the afternoon drinking and cooking a homemade dinner together, according to ABC 4 News…
