ABC Adjusts Good Morning America Lineup Amid 9/11 Commemoration
On Friday, September 11, Good Morning America experienced a temporary lineup change as longtime anchor Robin Roberts was absent from the morning broadcast. Instead of appearing on GMA, Roberts hosted ABC’s special “9/11: Tribute in Light” that evening at 8 p.m. EST, marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
While Roberts was off-air during the morning show, regular hosts Michael Strahan and George Stephanopoulos were joined by fill-in anchor Rebecca Jarvis. Weekend anchor Whit Johnson also contributed live from the World Trade Center site in Manhattan, where the twin towers were struck in the tragic events of 2001.
The prime-time tribute was broadcast live from Lower Manhattan and featured veteran anchors David Muir, Diane Sawyer, and Roberts. Muir reflected on the profound impact of covering the attacks, calling it the “truest horror” he has witnessed.
Disney Entertainment Television Chairman Debra O’Connell emphasized the network’s commitment to honoring victims and their families through meaningful storytelling. Viewers responded positively, praising the program’s respectful and moving homage to the 2,977 lives lost.
Looking ahead, Robin Roberts is scheduled to return to Good Morning America on Monday, September 14. In addition to Roberts’ temporary absence, ABC announced changes to the weekend anchor roster earlier in the week.
Starting September 12, Rachel Scott will co-anchor Saturdays alongside Whit Johnson, while Gio Benitez will partner with Rhiannon Ally on Sundays. Leslie Lopez will take on weekend meteorology duties.
These adjustments follow the departure of Janai Norman, who left Good Morning America in April after four years. Norman expressed sadness over her sudden exit, sharing that she had hoped for more time to say farewell to colleagues and viewers. “It has been a joy to connect with my coworkers and with viewers… So, it really breaks my heart that I don’t get to say goodbye,” she said.
