RIO RANCHO — The caretaker responsible for the 2023 abuse and death of disabled woman, Mary Melero, was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Monday.
Angelita Chacon, of Rio Rancho, recently pleaded guilty for the abuse and neglect that led to Melero’s death. In addition to her prison sentence, Chacon has also been ordered to pay $3.3 million dollars as restitution for her criminal actions, including $2.5 million directly to the victim’s estate. Restitution in the amount of about $860,000 goes to the state of New Mexico.
