Volcano Vista sophomore wins national wrestling tournament

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – While the Volcano Vista wrestling team picked up a win at the Joe Vivian classic over the weekend, the Hawks also picked up a win on the national stage. Lorenzo Gallegos, a sophomore at Volcano, skipped the tournament and competed in a much larger one.

Gallegos spent the weekend in Oklahoma at the Tulsa Nationals. The 15-and-under event had over 2,500 wrestlers from 47 states, and Gallegos brought home the title for the 135 pound division.

The bracket that Gallegos was in was a 64-man bracket and he started off with a bye. He then made light work of the competition as he won his first three matches by technical falls and his final three by points.

“It’s like one of the beginning tournaments that puts you on the stage and so this was a big opportunity for me and an advancement in my career,” said Gallegos. “I let them know I’m here to wrestle. I’m not here to mess around. I’m here for business.”
