Opening date for ‘largest’ playground slides in New Mexico delayed

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The opening date for the state’s largest slides has been delayed due to vandalism, according to the city. Albuquerque Parks and Recreation officials also say that the date of the damage to the slides being built at Juan Tabo Hills Park is unknown but most likely happened before January 16, 2024.

Parks and Recreation Marketing and Communications Coordinator Emily Moore says discussions are ongoing concerning the best approach for moving forward with the manufacturer. She says a new target opening date has not been set.

The slides are being built atop an 80-foot embankment with a 100-foot ride from top to bottom. The city says this makes them the largest slides in New Mexico. In June, the city said the project would be open by the end of summer 2023.

Moore says something like these slides have not been done before in New Mexico. She says it’s been a beneficial process of learning and adjustment in order to complete the project, such as adding more slope stabilization and adding handrails to the long staircase.
