Friday’s Five Facts
[1] Four killed in medical aircraft crash near Capitan; crews work to extinguish wildfire – Four people have died, and a fire ignited after a medical transport aircraft crashed in the Capitan Mountain area in Lincoln County on Thursday morning. A plane took off from Roswell for a medical transport mission and was headed to the Sierra Blanca Regional Airport when communication and radar contact were lost. All four people on board died; there were no patients on board. New Mexico State Police is investigating the cause of the crash, which remains unknown at this time
[2] Rio Rancho police explain length of investigation into crash that killed BCSO sergeant – In February, BCSO Sergeant Michael Schlattman was killed during a traffic stop near Carnuel on I-40. An investigation report from Rio Rancho Police said the driver of the semi, Miguel Orlando Perez, did not apply the brakes before crashing into Schlattman’s patrol unit. KRQE News 13 spoke with Rio Rancho police, who led the investigation into the crash. The department said that complex investigations like this can take up to a year to complete. The case is now in the hands of the Bernalillo County District Attorney to determine if Perez will be charged.
[3] Dry and slightly cooler before warmer weather – Another hot day returns Friday, with highs once again mostly in the 80s and 90s. Winds will pick up across southern and southeastern New Mexico, bringing a critical fire danger to those areas. A few spotty sprinkles will also be possible in northeast New Mexico.
