Flood Watch Posted for Washington Area as Severe Storms Could Dump 3 Inches per Hour Thursday Afternoon

WASHINGTON, DC — Severe weather is expected to return to the Washington region Thursday, and a Flood Watch is now in effect as storms build from the afternoon into the evening. The National Weather Service says the setup could bring flash flooding, especially where recent rain has already saturated the ground.

Early conditions were cloudy with temperatures in the mid- to upper-70s and a few showers around the area. Most of the morning should stay mainly dry, although a stray shower or isolated thunderstorm could still develop.

Heat and humidity build before storms arrive

Temperatures are forecast to climb into the upper 80s and near 90 degrees later Thursday, with humidity rising as well. FOX 5’s Taylor Grenda said showers may pop up on and off through midday, but the more serious storm threat holds off until after 2 p.m.

Forecasters expect the strongest storms to threaten the evening commute and continue toward sunset before gradually weakening later at night.
