Man convicted of raping teen, fleeing to Mexico dies in jail, coroner says (UPDATE)

A 53-year-old man convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl and fleeing with her to Mexico died by suicide while incarcerated at Lehigh County Jail, authorities said.

The Lehigh County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Kevin Esterly, with addresses previously listed in Whitehall and Lowhill townships. He was pronounced dead just after 2:15 a.m. Monday at St. Luke’s Hospital-Allentown.

An autopsy was conducted Monday. Esterly was found hanging by a bedsheet that had been tied to his top bed bunk, authorities said…
