Two Central Jersey historic sites face demolition threat

Two Central Jersey structures were named to Preservation New Jersey’s 2026 list of the 10 Most Endangered Historic Places in the state, highlighting the risk of loss to historically significant sites in Hunterdon and Somerset counties.

The sites are an 1878 barn along historic Old York Road in Ringoes, and the former Lord Stirling School property at 99 Lord Stirling Road in Bernards Township.

According to Preservation New Jersey, the barn is the last surviving pre-modern structure of its kind in the historic village of Ringoes, off Route 202-31. The two-story timber-frame building is part of a rare house-and-barn pairing along Old York Road, once an Indigenous trail and a key stagecoach route between Elizabeth and Philadelphia.
