Man injured in crash on I-75 in Cobb after hitting 2 cars, police say

A 30-year-old man was critically injured Wednesday in a crash that closed all southbound lanes of I-75 for two hours in Cobb County, according to Marietta police.

The three-vehicle incident was reported around 10 a.m. just past the Canton Road Connector interchange, Officer Chuck McPhilamy said.

Investigators said two vehicles, a 2019 Subaru Impreza and a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox, were involved in a minor crash and pulled to the left shoulder. At the same time, Johnathan Layson, 30, of Canton, was driving a 2000 Ford Explorer in the far left lane.

“For reasons unknown, Lawson left his lane of travel and drove onto the left-hand shoulder,” McPhilamy said in a news release.

The Explorer hit the Equinox, pushing it into the Impreza. The impact pushed the Explorer across all lanes of travel before it struck the right-hand barrier and came to a rest in the opposite shoulder, police said.

Layson sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he remained in critical condition Wednesday afternoon, police said. A second driver suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.
