AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Amarillo Police Department notified the community that it is aware of and concerned about the recent acts of violence.

APD said, “We understand the fear, frustration, and questions many of our citizens are experiencing, and we want you to know that we hear you and we share those concerns. We have seen comments regarding gang violence and public safety.”
Officials stated that on May 29, 2026, Police Chief Hover addressed these concerns and other issues in a video message and shared it again to reassure residents that these concerns are not being ignored.

A strategic realignment began in May 2026, focusing on violent crimes and traffic safety. APD has added a dedicated Gang Unit and increased patrol staffing, with 15 personnel assigned to patrol operations. The increase in patrol units aims to improve response times, increase the number of squad cars in the neighborhood, and increase police engagement in the community.
