Amarillo Zoo’s senior black-footed ferret Mandalorian ‘Mando’ dies after health complications

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Amarillo Zoo has reported that its senior black-footed ferret, Mandalorian “Mando,” died on Tuesday.

According to officials at the Amarillo Zoo, on Monday afternoon, a keeper observed that Mando was not acting like himself and was experiencing tremors. The team consulted with the zoo’s veterinary staff, including Dr. Cabello and Dr. Pearson, as well as experts from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Following their recommendations, Mando was transported to the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for diagnostics to determine the cause of his sudden decline.

Officials reported that blood tests indicated Mando was suffering from acute end-stage kidney failure. His kidney values were far beyond the threshold for recovery. After consultations among all the veterinarians involved, the decision was made to humanely euthanize him to prevent any further suffering.
