University of Cambridge sociology professor Jason Arday has resigned amid an ongoing investigation into allegations of plagiarism and questions surrounding his academic credentials and honorary titles. The university announced the probe on Wednesday following accusations that have stirred considerable controversy.
The concerns first emerged last month when Nathan Cofnas, a former Cambridge philosophy researcher, published a detailed critique accusing Arday of plagiarism and fabricating parts of his personal background. Cofnas alleged that Arday, who was hired as a prominent figure in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts at Cambridge, had lifted substantial material from a 2009 dissertation without proper citation, even replicating copy-editing errors. Additional papers by Arday were reportedly corrected to include missing citations, which Cofnas interpreted as further evidence of academic misconduct.
Cofnas expressed disappointment over Arday’s resignation, noting that he believed Arday was effectively representing DEI initiatives at the university. However, he also questioned how Arday’s claimed personal history-such as being nonverbal until age eleven and nearly illiterate until eighteen-aligned with his rapid academic ascent, including earning a Ph.D. in 2015 and becoming Cambridge’s youngest Black professor in 2023.
Initially, Cambridge University stood by Arday, citing prior investigations by Liverpool John Moores University and academic journals that had addressed similar allegations. However, the university reversed course on Wednesday, announcing a new investigation based on fresh information about Arday’s qualifications and honors. The university stated that it would refrain from further comment until the inquiry concludes.
Shortly after the announcement, Arday issued a statement through the Good Law Project confirming his immediate resignation. He cited the intense public scrutiny and personal attacks as factors in his decision, acknowledging the toll it has taken on him and his loved ones. Arday emphasized his commitment to higher education and the impact he hoped his journey had on others but said the personal cost had become too great to continue.
Nathan Cofnas suggested to Fox News Digital that, with Arday’s departure, his own appointment to the professorship could help restore confidence in the university’s academic standards. Cofnas himself faced controversy at Cambridge and was dismissed in 2024 following criticism of his writings on race and meritocracy.
The investigation into Jason Arday’s academic conduct remains underway, and both the university and Arday have been contacted for further comment.
