Flash flood warnings were issued around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 12 as a powerful rainstorm rushed through Dumas, then Amarillo and Canyon and on to Plainview, leaving drivers on I-40 stranded and intersections flooded throughout the city.
An earlier report said that 0 .5″ of rain fell within one hour of the rainstorm starting. Intersections and major roads throughout the city flooded quickly, while I-40 and other underpasses flooded, catching a mix of truck tractors with semi-trailers and other vehicles in its wake. Police were working on clearing out the underpass at Bell & I-40, which caused one traffic backup.
An apartment was reported as being evacuated at one point in the storm. Some hail fell in part of the city but not enough to do damage, apparently…
