AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Amarillo Police Department confirmed that the man who had barricaded himself in a backyard cellar in southwest Amarillo on Thursday was found dead by officers responding to the scene, with investigations into the incident still ongoing after 1 p.m.

Amarillo Police Chief Martin Birkenfeld reported that the man allegedly broke into a cellar in the 3600 block of Fleetwood on Thursday morning after exchanging gunshots with police while fleeing from the scene of a reported kidnapping.

While Birkenfeld noted that no officers were struck by any gunfire and that police did not fire shots after the initial chase on Thursday morning, the man allegedly continued to fire shots “most likely from inside the cellar.” The man had already allegedly injured one person, said Birkenfeld, though no further information on the injured person’s status was available at the time of his update.
