$47M roadway upgrade to help Texans get to ‘Amarillo by Morning’

George Strait may not be visiting Amarillo on his mini Texas tour — honestly, a missed opportunity — but that doesn’t mean Texas leaders aren’t making it easier for drivers to get to “Amarillo by Morning.” In fact, a new multimillion-dollar project is the latest in a series of upgrades headed to the Texas Panhandle city.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Amarillo district submitted plans to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) on April 6 for a $47 million upgrade to a roadway along the I-27 corridor. The upgrades will stretch from north of FM 2186 to north of Arden Road, covering more than 168,000 square feet. The TDLR calls for the construction of four new main lanes, ramps, bridges, traffic signals and Arden Road grade separation.

Construction is expected to kick off on November 30 and is aiming to be completed by November 23, 2029. These are estimates, and all TDLR filings are subject to change without notice…
