Randall County residents contend with burnt property, lingering smoke as wildfires burn

CANYON – Driving just a few miles south of the Canyon suburbs on Friday, fields of dry grass turned black where fire had burned through roads and fence lines the night before.

A blaze in Randall County, dubbed the Hunggate Fire, was believed to have been ignited by a lightning strike. By Friday afternoon, according to the Forest Service, the fire had burned 14,300 acres near the community of Canyon and prompted multiple evacuations within a 24-hour period. The wildfires were still blazing by Friday night and the exact impact was still being discovered.
