What began as a late-night family dispute inside a Santa Ana apartment ended with a 16-year-old boy shot and killed by police on Sunday, authorities said. Officers responded around 10:30 p.m. to a reported family disturbance on the 3400 block of Main Street. Police say the teen was armed with a knife when officers confronted him. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and no officers were injured.
According to CBS Los Angeles, a man told police that his girlfriend’s 16-year-old son was damaging property inside the apartment and had stabbed him. When officers arrived, they encountered the teen, who police say was still armed with a knife, and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The Santa Ana Police Department said its Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs Division, and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office will continue to investigate.
Earlier deadly encounter heightened scrutiny
The latest deadly encounter follows a January shooting in which Santa Ana officers fatally shot 18-year-old Victor Lopez after a traffic stop ended inside a parking garage. The Lopez case, including release of body-camera footage and a federal civil-rights lawsuit, has increased scrutiny of the department, as reported by NBC Los Angeles.
Investigations underway
The Santa Ana Police Department said its Homicide Unit and Internal Affairs will handle the department’s part of the probe while the Orange County District Attorney’s office conducts a parallel review, per CBS Los Angeles.
