Elderly O.C. man loses $25K in elaborate scam involving call from fake police chief

Family members said an Orange County man in his 80s lost tens of thousands of dollars in an elaborate scam involving a fake call from the Irvine chief of police.

This case does have a lot of red flags, but a lot of people don’t recognize those red flags, especially many seniors who scams like this seem to target.

In this case, the scam started with a text message. “This was definitely a unique case where multiple people worked in concert with one another to make this scam more believable,” said Irvine Police Department spokesperson Ziggy Azarcon.
