Burmese culture makes a memorable splash at Orange Coast College

Orange Coast College Burmese students found a sense of belonging and community when they celebrated Thingyan (Burmese Water Festival) on Thursday, April 30, to recognize the Myanmar New Year.

OCC student Rain Htet said celebrating Burmese holidays like Thingyan is important to remember their home.

“Burmese people are feeling out of place more than ever,” said Htet, who serves as a cultural representative for the Orange Coast College Burmese Student Association. “We’re feeling guilty, feeling guilty like we’re not connected with home anymore and this event doesn’t mean that we forgot what Burma is.”…
