The Calif. Mexican restaurant with an obsessive, overwhelming love of Elvis

Rolling through downtown Garden Grove, a modestly sized Orange County city next door to Anaheim, you at first might think that the centrally located Azteca restaurant is just another in an endless sea of sit-down Mexican spots. But look closer at the second-floor balcony of the two-story Spanish-style building that houses it, and you’ll spot a celebrity: Elvis himself, microphone in hand, peering down on Main Street.

And that’s just the beginning of the King-inspired wackiness.

A larger-than-life Elvis statue is at the door. The ceiling is plastered from end to end, and the walls from top to bottom, with framed movie posters for films like “Blue Hawaii,” “Viva Las Vegas” and “King Creole,” many in other languages. Tchotchkes, statues and framed news clippings about the King abound. A television flickers with grainy black-and-white Elvis performances. And the soundtrack to all of this? Yep, you guessed it…
