AROUND ALASKA: Bridge Launch, Shelter Demo, and Drain Art!

Three teenagers are being credited with helping put out a forest fire in Houston. Firefighters in Houston responded to a fire on city land Sunday. When they arrived, three teens were already there, running a “bucket brigade” from the Little Susitna River to keep the flames from spreading. The Houston Fire Department says those teens “saved a lot of woods” and helped protect nearby businesses.

Progress is being made on the Juneau Creek Bridge near Cooper Landing. State transportation leaders say the “bridge launch” is now underway. When complete, this bridge will span nearly 1,000 feet across a canyon and stand 250 feet tall, making it one of the tallest in the state.

In Bethel, demolition of the old dog pound has begun. The city shared photos on Facebook. Once the demo is complete, the plan is to construct a brand-new animal shelter here in Bethel…
