‘Responding to a symptom, not the root cause’: Mat-Su schools approve program allowing select staff to carry handguns on campus

WASILLA, Alaska (KTUU) – A new policy in the Mat-Su Borough School District would allow select staff the option to carry concealed handguns on campus.

On June 3, the district’s school board voted 5-2 to make changes to its board policy 3515. The changes would allow qualified staff members to carry a concealed handgun or a non-lethal security device on school grounds.

According to the MSBSD policy agenda, the policy change is driven by a commitment to student and staff safety. It establishes a framework that allows qualified volunteers who meet defined standards, complete required training and pass background checks to serve as an additional layer of protection on school property…
