ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – A deck in Houston, Alaska, was built from 18,390 pounds of recycled plastic, according to the Anchorage company behind it, and they said that material can outlast traditional wood.
Alaska Plastic Recovery collects discarded plastic from Anchorage residents and turns it into an outdoor building material called Grizzly Wood. The company operates out of the Municipality of Anchorage’s material recovery facility.
“Our main objective is to protect an asset, which is the landfill,” said Kelli Toth, Solid Waste Services director.
From drop-off to finished product
Residents can bring plastic types 1, 2 and 5 to the facility six days a week. Most plastics will have a number on the container, where people can check if it is 1, 2, or 5…
