Anchorage schools push first day back after parent backlash

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The Anchorage School Board has approved an updated 2026-27 school calendar that returns the first day of school to Aug. 19 after complaints from families about an earlier start date.

In a message sent to families this week, the Anchorage School District said the board approved the revised calendar Tuesday night. Under the update, the school year will begin Aug. 19, while three additional instructional days will be scheduled during the final quarter of the school year.
