BEAVER ISLAND, Mich. (News 10) – When you flip a light switch, you probably don’t think much about where that power comes from. But on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan, people think about it a lot.
The island sits roughly 30 miles offshore, and residents rely on what they call their “umbilical cord” — a power line that runs from the mainland, under the lake and up onto the island.
Now, University of Michigan researchers are looking for a backup, using the water all around the island to help keep the lights on…
