Saline Tests Electric Buses Ahead of Winter

Students waiting outside Harvest Elementary last spring had a clear preference when they saw a bus approaching.

“Bus 4, Bus 4,” they chanted, hoping one of Saline Area Schools’ new electric buses would arrive instead of a diesel model.

The district’s three electric buses were delivered March 17 and have since logged 5,806 miles combined. Transportation staff placed them on a variety of routes after spring break, including a longer rural run, to learn where the new technology would work best.

So far, the buses have handled the assignments. Now comes their next test: a full Michigan winter…
