Survivor of deadly stabbing, family of victim settle dispute over dog

ANN ARBOR, MI – The daughter of a woman who was fatally stabbed in 2023 and the woman’s surviving partner have settled an ongoing dispute over a dog.

Ed Berger and Elana James agreed Berger would be allowed to keep Isabelle, a dog at the heart of an ownership dispute between the pair after the death of Susan Hammerton in 2024. The final out-of-court settlement was signed in June, according to a copy provided to MLive.

Hammerton, 81, was fatally stabbed during a home invasion of her and Berger’s home in the 1900 block of Breckland Drive in Pittsfield Township. Berger and Isabelle were also stabbed but survived…
