DETROIT – In the quarter century after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, pieces of the World Trade Center remain on display across Michigan, serving as memorials to the people who died and the first responders who ran toward danger.
The steel is displayed at fire stations, veterans’ posts, university campuses, city buildings and public parks. Each piece has its own history, but together they form a network of reminders that reaches from southeast Michigan to communities farther west.
In Brighton, a beam stands in front of the Brighton Fire Department on Grand River Avenue. The steel was retrieved from Ground Zero and is believed to have come from one of the towers’ sky plaza areas…
