Dexter Community Schools’ Safety Reminder about E-Bikes and E-Motos

Dexter Community Schools (DCS) Superintendent Ryan Bruder took some time out in his recent “Letter from the Superintendent” to address a topic that’s become a much talked about as more and more people are seeing these newer and in some cases faster electric bikes around the community.

Bruder said DCS and the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) have received a number of questions and concerns regarding the use of e-bikes and e-motos/e-dirt bikes in the community. Bruder said WCSO School Resource Officer (SRO) Brian Ward shared some helpful information for families about Michigan law and safe, legal use.

An e-bike is a bicycle that has a small rechargeable electric motor that can give a boost to the pedaling rider or can take over pedaling completely. A vehicle is defined as an e-moto rather than an e-bike if it meets certain criteria, including exceeding 750 watts of power; can go faster than 28 mph under motor assist; functions primarily via a hand throttle at speeds above 20 mph and lacks fully operable, functional human pedals…
