Dexter Council Approves False Fire Alarm Ordinance After Lengthy Debate

Dexter property owners who repeatedly generate preventable false fire alarms could face escalating fees beginning next year under an ordinance amendment approved by City Council on Sept. 28.

Council voted 6-1 to amend the city’s existing false alarm ordinance to include responses by the Dexter Area Fire Department. Council also approved a separate fee schedule that takes effect Jan. 1, 2027. The first false alarm will be waived, followed by a $500 fee for the second occurrence, $1,000 for the third, and $3,000 for the fourth, with a provision for an appeal process…
