Summer is here, but parts of Texas will struggle to see the sun on Monday, June 1. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that some areas could see storms this week.
Hail, tornado risk in Amarillo
Forecasters say a storm system is moving into the northern Oklahoma Panhandle this afternoon. The Northern Texas Panhandle –– including Stratford, Perryton and Canadian –– faces a Level 1 risk of severe weather.
Ping-pong-sized hail, 65 mph wind gusts and a tornado are the primary hazards, according to the NWS. Meteorologists say these hazards are most likely between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., when there’s also a 20% chance of showers, per the agency’s seven-day forecast for Amarillo. Folks may also notice frequent lightning during this period.
Despite the wet weather pattern, above-normal temperatures are expected across the region. Palo Duro Canyon is expected to see highs of 101 to 103 degrees.
“Thankfully, they will not be record-breaking as the record highs for June 1 are 8 to 10 degrees warmer than what is forecast,” the agency said…
