Neighbors in a small community on the boundary of Gaithersburg city and unincorporated Montgomery Village were left wanting for answers after a Thursday town hall meeting erupted into chaos over recent immigration arrests and the shootings of two men, one fatally, by police.
In an interview on Friday morning, Councilmember Dawn Luedtke (D-Dist. 7) told Bethesda Today her goal in convening Thursday’s meeting at South Lake Elementary School was to answer “why so much happens in and around that area” and promote resources that address the root causes of violence. Community members packed the school’s cafeteria for the event, which began with a series of presentations from county and city agency leaders.
The tenor of the town hall changed after half an hour, when Luedtke and other officials declined to engage with some in the audience about the fatal shooting of a 46-year-old Black man by city and county police at a Lost Knife Road bus stop last month, citing an ongoing investigation.
