Town hall building in Canton to be demolished by end of June

CANTON, N.C. (WLOS) — A landmark building in Canton will soon be no more. The historic Canton Town Hall building is set to be demolished by the end of June after the Board of Aldermen approved demolition Thursday, June 4.

This comes after the building on Park Street suffered flood damage from Tropical Storm Fred in 2021 and Helene in 2024.

“The last time I was in Town Hall was just a few days before [Tropical Storm] Fred. So getting out of the floodway, you know, start renovations on our new town hall. But we’re also very, very happy, and this is something important to me,” said Canton Mayor Zeb Smathers…
